Storage space is one of the most important parts of every home; it's an absolute 'must'. The key is finding contemporary storage which adds to the modern design of your home, rather than just being a practical necessity. 'Storage' is, of course a pretty broad term covering shelves, bookcases, sideboards, chests of drawers, trunks, ottomans and and many other pieces of furniture.
Every single room will need storage space, making it one of the most important components in your home. Storage can come in all shapes and sizes, fulfilling all purposes, so there is a tremendous selection to choose from. The furniture you choose for your home is a fantastic way of expressing your own personal style.
The first thing which might spring to mind is probably traditional furniture such as wooden chests and bookcases. Contemporary furniture represents a refreshing way of looking at home storage, as well as design generally. We've put together a few of the quirkiest, most creative home storage solutions which we could find.
Oak is one of the most commonly used materials for making furniture, and has been for centuries. The best thing about contemporary european brands, like Ethnicraft, is that they are able to create such innovative and original designs from such a well known medium. Oak is a beautiful and extremely sturdy wood, so there's no reason to leave it in the past!
This bookcase is a a really good example of the contemporary style treatment which can be given to oak, without compromising storage space. Sometimes you have to sacrifice practicality in order to gain aesthetics; luckily that isn't the case with this design. The odd sized cuboid shelves, sitting inside a solid rectangular frame, provide your living room with a really eye-catching statement piece.
Comic Shelf-
Cool cool cool. That's pretty much it. Bringing 2D pop-art style into 3D life is a definite plus This wooden shelf, in the shape of a comic book speech bubble, is a reminder that we don't have to take our interior so seriously all the time. Having furniture which has context in media or popular culture is a great way to add something unique to your home.
This is another one which you can make for yourself. Although you might need a little prior experience with a few tools, but it's definitely do-able!
Bjørn Blikstad - Imeuble Shelves
Danish designer, Bjorn Blikstad has come up with this incredible feat of geometrical design. Bilkstad himself has said that this piece is neither design or art, and it's fine for it to be both. Why choose between aesthetics and functionality when pieces like this can effortlessly feature both?
