Deck the Walls - Get Creative With Your Wall Art

Modern design is so often based upon, or inspired by, minimalistic ideas that we are restricted to a consistent 'less is more' approach. Minimalism is responsible for a huge number of things which make contemporary design the exciting world that it is, but it certainly isn't the be all and end all. These walls are the perfect example of how to have fun, express yourself and get creative.

Feature walls have become a fixture over the past few years, but I have always felt that their is a certain identity and character missing from wallpaper, slapped upon an accent wall. What you can see in the interior above is a space where you can really express your own taste and, as  a result, create your own rules.

Perhaps my favourite part of this wall art arrangement is that it far from uniform. If you were to get a Sharpie (or any of the other fantastic marker pens, available in all good stationary stores) and draw a line around the arrangement, it wouldn't even nearly make a perfect rectangle. On top of this irregular outline, the gaps between the pictures aren't all the same either. It's a potential OCD nightmare, but other than that, it's a visually stimulating and interesting wall.

The irregularity and inconsistency of this style is what makes it work, which is why it's so perfect to try yourself. You can mix and match different types of art and create your contrasts. Perhaps some abstract photography mixed with the simple lines of Matisse, or even an old oil painting mixed with some striking modern text. This style of wall art thrives on contrasts, juxtapositions and variety.

Beauty in variety is one of 4 Living's key principles, and it has helped created a great collection of contemporary furniture and home accessories. Different shapes, sizes and styles can always mix together, it's just a case of finding the 'right' pieces to your own puzzle.
