Did you Know?... A Man Once Built a Secret Apartment in a Mall

We are constantly searching for the most creative and unique interior design ideas, but this was a surprise even to us. We stumbled across a story from 2007, about how an artist managed to create a completely secret apartment in the parking garage. The apartment was built over the course of a few weeks with the help of some of his artist friends, and went under the radar for over three years.
What would make someone want to live in a mall? If you are an employed artist, why would you need to create your own secret home? This quote from the artist's website goes some way to explaining the logic behind the mall apartment:
During the Christmas season of 2003 and 2004, radio ads for the Providence Place Mall featured an enthusiastic female voice talking about how great it would be if you (we) could live at the mall. The central theme of the ads was that the mall not only provided a rich shopping experience, but also had all the things that one would need to survive and lead a healthy life. This, along with a wide variety of theoretical musings about my relationship to the mall - as a citizen and public artists - provided the final catalyst for making the apartment.
The apartment had a modern sofa and coffee table, just like any there contemporary apartment. They had electricity for TV and Playstation, so it was hardly 'ghetto'. A few different people lived there during it's known, none of whom were ever caught out as they used the mall toilet as their own facilities. Unfortunately, the creator himself was caught leaving the apartment, leading to its demolition and his arrest. It was a good run.
From reading his blog, which you can see here, it becomes abundantly clear that this hair-brain scheme was neither an art installation or social rebellion, but more of an exploration. We don't condone random apartment creation, but its certainly refreshing to see somebody have a creative idea and simply do it.
4 Living are always trying to find new and creative brands to add to the existing range. their range of contemporary oak sideboards exemplifies a refreshing new way of looking at a well known medium. it's not quite an art installation, but our modern oak furniture is certainly eye-catching.
