Did you know the colour that you choose for the sofas in the house can help change the mood of the home? This is because they help to bring out your personality and can influence a person’s thought as well as the mood of the day. colour affects people in various ways depending on a person’s ethnic background, gender, age or local climate. There are some colours however that tend to get the same reaction from many people. The overall difference lies in the tones or shades used. It is therefore important to choose the colour of the sofa wisely.

It is also important to understand that colours generally behave in 3 ways neutral, passive and active. Light colours are airy and expansive which makes the room appear brighter and larger while dark colours are warm and sophisticated giving the room more intimate feeling. Below are some of the colours and the moods they bring to the room:

Red - this helps to increase the energy levels in the room. It’s an excellent choice when you want to stir an exciting mood in the living room. It can actually help to brighten up your mood when you are feeling low as soon as you step into the room. It is also considered one of the most intense colours that pump the most adrenaline when compared to any other hue.

Yellow - using this colour on the sofa depicts a happy mood as it captures the joy of sunshine and it also communicates joy. It can be uplifting and energizing and can feel welcoming and expansive. There are some studies that reveal that people will most likely lose their temper in a room that has yellow interior. Babies also tend to cry more when sitting on yellow chairs.

Blue - this is an excellent colour used on sofas as it is considered serene, relaxing and calming. It is said to slow down heart rate, slow respiration and bring down blood pressure. It encourages a relaxation mood where it works out well if you have used warmer hues such as turquoise, cerulean, bright blues or periwinkle. Avoid very dark shades as they can tend to evoke sad feelings. For a calming effect, try and stick to the lighter shades of blue.

Green - this is one of the colours that is considered most restful on the eye when used on your sofas. It helps to cool things down which encourages an unwinding mood. It also has enough warmth to promote togetherness and comfort. It also has a calming effect and is believed to relieve stress and help people relax. There are some people who believe that it is used to enhance fertility thus can be used on the chairs in the bedroom.

Purple - this is considered a dramatic, sophisticated and rich colour. Getting a purple sofa is associated with creativity and luxury giving great depth when used as a secondary/accent colour. You can opt for lighter versions like lilac and lavender when looking to achieve a restful mood in the room. This can be mixed with other colours depending on taste and preference.

In most homes, sofas are the centre pieces of the living room that can make or break the room which implies that they can also affect the mood of the home. It is therefore important to choose them very carefully especially in regards to colour so that they can serve their intended purpose in the best way possible.
