Accessorising Oriental Solid Wood Furniture

If you are looking to create a contemporary oriental living room with your own personal touch, then 4 Living’s black and white lacquer solid wood furniture is the perfect starting point. But your choice of decor and accessories can give you a completely different feel to the end result. With a black lacquer living room piece such as a TV cabinet or coffee table, try to choose accessories which emphasise the character in the deep lacquer layers and rugged edging. An excellent way to do this is with a warm coloured rug such as our Taj Agra rug. The design and style certainly have an Asian influence and the depth of the pattern will bring out the best in the dark lacquer. To keep the overall feeling warm but more contemporary, choose a mid to dark colour plain rug such as the Harlequin in brown or terracotta. A lighter colour rug will create a greater sense of contrast and drama, making the black lacquer piece the centre of attention – for example by using a Light Beige Harlequin rug, or a White Shetland rug.

White lacquer furniture is more suited to really brightening up a room and is a good choice for smaller spaces. The golden edging ensures it still has a traditional oriental feel, as well as the ability to spread and utilise light. A rug such as the Shetland ‘sand’ rug would complement the golden edging of the lacquer piece perfectly.

Both colours of the lacquer collection provide a good neutral background for experimenting with colour and pattern. This can be a great solution if you like to change the colour and feel of a room quite frequently. In a living room, use one or two feature walls covered with vintage floral style wallpaper. The pattern really complements the angles of the furniture and helps to breathe life into the room. In a bedroom, use duvet covers with strong colours and designs in order to complement the lacquer woodwork and also to avoid a monotonous colour palette in the bedroom.

When it comes to lighting, choose lamps which reflect both the simplicity of the designs, as well as the sheen of the lacquer surface. Many of our glass base table lamps, with black or cream shades will work well here. To keep it minimal try the Bliss Smoke table lamp, which has a grey smoke glass base and a black silk shade. Alternatively, add warmth, shape and colour with, for example, the Mia table lamp.

Accessorising Natural Oak, Teak and Walnut Solid Wood Furniture

Oak, Teak and Walnut are hardwoods which all have beautiful and elegant grains. Bringing out the colour of the grain in solid wood furniture is a fantastic way of giving a living space a natural feel, but with a contemporary twist. Walnut is the darkest of the three hardwoods and can therefore be accessorised with deeper tones. The Hermitage Gold Leaf table lamp is an extremely attractive accessory to a Walnut Sideboard as the lampshade will bring out the colour of the grain and the gold leaf on the lamp itself will provide a rugged yet elegant twist.

Our larger items of solid wood furniture (for example, our 4 door Oak sideboard measures is 216cm long and 91cm high) can seem quite imposing if not accessorised properly. Once again, a patterned wallpaper is an ideal complimentary feature. In the 4 door Oak sideboard, the open shelf offers a fantastic way of giving a better sense of space and integrating the piece. A simple pastel blue floral wallpaper visible through the shelf will open up the whole space visually.

Your choice of rug should reflect the qualities of the wood, and our woollen rugs are the perfect complement to natural Oak, Walnut or Teak.

And when it comes to lighting, a bronze or brass tripod floor lamp is the perfect stylish accessory. Both the brass and bronze colours bring wood grain to life. Alternatively, keep it natural with a Wenge table lamp or tripod floor lamp.
