Top 10 Interiors from Film & TV
Posted by Alex Greenan on 25th Nov 2013
Welcome to 4 Living's top 10 iconic interiors from film & TV. I've judged it on a balance between cult status and genuine interior aesthetics, so it's entirely subjective!
The list may feature a couple of teeny-tiny spoilers, so be careful if you haven't seen the film. We'd love to hear your suggestions in the comments section below!
10. 'Fürni' Apartment (Fight Club)
The term iconic seems a little strange when this interior, owned by Edward Norton's protagonist in Fight Club, is supposed represent everything that is bad about consumer culture. The graphic visuals alone are enough to make it one of the most memorable movie interiors. IKEA have even made this type of graphic interface a reality!
9. Patrick Bateman's Apartment (American Psycho)
Just because somebody is psychopath murderous schizophrenic, doesn't mean they don't know how to design a kick-ass apartment. Bateman's character is exceptionally meticulous, and his attention to detail is apparent in this 90's New York penthouse.
8. Jess' Apartment (New Girl)
Who's that girl? The most modern entry in the list, the apartment from New Girl epitomises twenty-something penthouse living. Jess, Schmidt, Winston and Nick's place is the perfect example of how to separate an open planned space into bit-size chunks!
7. Mia Wallace's House (Pulp Fiction)
I felt like I should include one of the best interiors from a truly ironic, top 10 kind of film. Mia Wallace (and presumably her husband, Marcellus) are the proud owners of this swanky abode. Refined, minimalist, but not lacking in a few quirky touches, such as the twisted lamp.
6. Bradbury Building (Bladerunner/500 Days of Summer)
More Zooey Deschanel? That's the world we live in, so deal with it. Although exceptionally attractive, LA's Bradbury Building is not strictly on this list because of aesthetics. It was used in the Sci-fi classic, Bladerunner in 1989 to represent a dingy, desolate vision of the future. Fast forward 27 years, to the actual future, and the same space is being used for a mega fashionable office building in 500 Days of Summer!
5. Bruce Wayne's Oriental Bedroom (The Dark Knight)
Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find a great image of this scene because I seem to be the only one to appreciate it! When he isn't chasing the Joker or Bane around Gotham City, Bruce Wayne rests in this authentically oriental interior space. In the movie series, Bruce goes to the far east to learn how to fight and stuff, so it's a nice continuity.
4. Cameron's House (Ferris Bueller's Day Off)
There is nothing about this film that isn't done in style. From Ferris' complex sound effects system, to the huge carnival scene. Ferris' friend Cameron's house is no exception. The ultramodern forest house sits on stilts, resembling something from Star Wars!
3. Lionel's Office (The King's Speech)
One of the best parts of the Kings's Speech was the set and costume design, especially when creating contrast between Lionel and Bertie. The melee of different colours, patterns and styles perfectly symbolises Lionel's mad and unconventional nature.
2. Monica & Chandler's apartment (Friends)
"Has it always been purple?". The New York apartment displays an eclectic mix of styles, representing all of the different characters who have called it home. As well as being the main set for the show, the apartment is also unique as every one of the main characters has lived there. Even Ross, as we found out in the last episode!
1. The Simpsons' Living Room (The Simpsons)
America's favourite family are the proud owners of the #1 spot in our list of TV and movie interiors. From full scale circus acts to animated tributes, the Simpsons' various living room animations make it one of the single most iconic and recognisable interiors in history. You can see a compilation below:
