1.Overcrowding

The world of interiors offers so much choice that it can often be difficult to decide exactly what you want. With the growth of online furniture and interiors stores, there is even more choice available, at the click of a mouse. The key to shopping for your home is deciding what you want/need, and sticking to it. Trying to cram too many different things a room is almost always the product of not making your mind up; overcrowding will only ever make your interior cluttered and claustrophobic.

2.Lacking Focus

Just as with overcrowding, lacking focus is often the product of not sticking to a plan. Lacking focus doesn't mean you need all your seating pointed at the TV, it simply means creating a room with a focal point, either visually or physically. Visually, a painted or accent wall will help the colour and light of the room to focus on one point. Physically, a coffee table or rug is the ideal way to give the living room focus. As well as the obvious aesthetic value, a coffee table also creates a connection between the seating around it.

3.Technology Frenzy

There is nothing good about proudly displaying how many different things you can plug into each other. It's quite true that we live in an age where we are lucky to have such great technology, enabling as to view TV and film, as well as listen to music, like never before. However, all of these contraptions still work when the aren't ceremoniously displayed!

4.Mixing Too Many Patterns

Patterns are making a big comeback at the moment, which provides a great deal of choice and flexibility when it comes to designing an interior. Patterns are a great way of invigorating and adding energy to a space, so it can often be tempting to go a little over the top. Patterned wallpaper enables you choose simple block colours in the rest of the room. It does NOT mean you have license to create contrast with further patterns. Before you know it, your living room will look like a bad Hawaiian shirt.

5.Trying to Replicate

Every home is different, every room is different and every person is different. By extension, every single interior design should be different. Interiors magazines, blogs and shops should act as inspiration, not an exact blueprint. By all means take bits and pieces from living rooms you've seen in magazines, but don't try and make a direct copy. A copied interior will be severely lacking any kind of personal connection, something which is essential for the longevity of a good, comfortable living room.
