What will the big interior trends be for 2014?
Posted by Alex Greenan on 8th Nov 2013
Sometimes the only way to stay up to date with fashions is to be ahead of time. The world of interiors is absolutely no exception, so I've put on my detective hat and found a few of the big up and coming trends for the next 12 months or so.
Geometric patterns
A big throwback to the design innovations of the 70's. The geometric patterns back then were part of a movement to create what they thought would be the styles of the future. The same sort of movement behind making Captain Scarlet in the future, but also basically still the 70's. A lot of the space suits, and brown upholstery they predicted was pretty off the mark, but does the 'throwback' return of geometric shapes mean they were sort of right about them being part of the future? Either way, these patterns will be a refreshing change from the utter dominance of floral patterns over the last few years!
Yellow
There seems to be a general consensus around the blogging world and twittersphere that yellow, and yellow walls in particular, will be one of the big trends of 2014. How have we allowed society to drop to this level? I think it's time to fast-track my time machine to the human testing phase and head straight for 2015.
Ok, I won't be a 'Scrooge' about yellow. Lets try and look at the positives: In the Summer it will probably look nicer than I'm currently imagining it as I sit in my woolly hat and scarf. As part of a pastel colour 'contemporary cottage' look I can actually imagine it looking pretty nice. Throw in a bit of pastel bunting, a few tulips, and you're sorted.
A new animal/object
There always something. In 2012 it was owls and this year (for seemingly no reason) it's been moustaches. What's next? I've created some betting odds to present my predictions:
Foxes - 5/1 - I've heard murmurings and seen a few prints start to pop up.
Badgers - 20/1 - Perhaps something topical? Probably not worth a flutter.
A Star Wars Character - 10/1 - Talk about left-field. With the release of another Star Wars movie approaching, expect to see more sci-fi pop-art references around.
A Bear or Rabbit - 7/1 - Having just watched the John Lewis Christmas advert, I have a feeling these critters are going to grow in popularity.
Throws, Rugs and Blankets
As Autumn is here and we are preparing for winter, this trend has already started. However, the cosy interior look is making a comeback, so expect all of this extra comfort to stick around well into the summer. I'm as much of a minimalistic interior as the next guy, but throws and rugs do add an extra sense of warmth, as well as stopping the place looking too sterile.
One of the big fashion trends next year looks to be the 'gingham' check style, so why not go for gingham blankets? There are plenty of fantastic styles and materials to choose from. Hey, you can even go for some geometric shapes!
